STEM Week at Stanton St Quintin!
A couple of weeks ago was STEM week at Stanton St Quintin and what a fun week it was! We worked across three afternoons taking part in different activities which involved us making air fresheners, exploring gloop, making a colour rainbow, creating a structure to make square bubbles and using sticks and jelly tots to make geodomic structures! We used skills such as predicting, investigating, experimenting and exploring along the way and our wonderful breadth of scientific vocabulary could be heard as we asked questions and explained our thoughts and findings. We also particularly enjoyed working in groups with friends from other classes where we impressed the adults with our team work, sharing and co-operation. Well done team Stanton!
Air Fresheners
We softened the gelatine in warm water and soon realised if the water was too cold the gelatine would not soften, but if the water was too hot, it dissolved!
We added food colouring and essential oils so they looked colourful and smelt beautiful.
After pouring the mixture into glass jars, we decorated them with flowers we collected and put them in the fridge. Our finished air fresheners were an array of colours and smells and were taken home to be enjoyed.
Gloop
Exploring 'gloop' was great fun! Some of us liked the way it felt and others didn't! We discovered the amount of water you add affects the consistency of the gloop and either makes it too solid or too runny! We did get into rather a mess which was fun!
Density Rainbows
We made density rainbows which involved us adding different amounts of sugar to different coloured liquids to then see if we could form a rainbow in a cup.
We found out that the more sugar in the liquid, the heavier the water became, so varying the amount of sugar allowed the coloured water to layer upon each other. Using a pipette VERY carefully and almost dribbling the liquid down the side of the cup enabled us to create the colourful rainbow. If we poured them in too quickly, they just mixed together. Some were successful and some were not, but we all had great fun trying to create them!
Jellytot Challenge
Using only jellytots and small sticks, we were given the challenge to build a structure. We either worked independently or in a group to see how big our structure could become.
Cube Bubbles
We used straws and pipe cleaners to create a cube structure then submerged that into bubble mixture. By using a pipette we blew air gently into the centre of the bubble which made it turn into a cube! It was a delicate operation but we managed it and created some fantastic cube bubbles.
Here's to STEM week 2026!!!
